Now with 8 lanes in total, the widened M4 delivers the fastest route for motorists between Parramatta and Homebush. The 27-month project, which commenced in March 2015, widened the motorway from three to four lanes in each direction. It is the first phase of the New M4 to be completed. Following extensive testing the additional lanes opened to traffic in July 2017.After a one-month toll free period, tolling commenced in August 2017.
The M4 East is the second phase of the New M4. Once complete, it will extend the M4 motorway in underground tunnels between Haberfield and Homebush. Around 80% of the 6.5 kilometre route will be in tunnels, with three lanes in each direction. Construction commenced in March 2016 and mainline tunnel excavation passed the half way point in June 2017. The project is on track for completion in 2019.
The New M5 will duplicate the existing M5 East between Kingsgrove and St Peters, to provide twin underground motorway tunnels, extending for nine kilometres. A new St Peters Interchange is being constructed at the site of the old Alexandria landfill facility. The project also includes connections to the WestConnex M4-M5 Link and the proposed Sydney Gateway.Construction for the New M5 began in July 2016, with tunnelling commencing in November 2016. It is due to become operational by early 2020.
The King Georges Road Interchange, between the existing M5 motorway and Beverly Hills, was upgraded in preparation for the New M5 program of works. Completed two months ahead of schedule, it opened to traffic in December 2016. The upgraded interchange improves access for motorists to the M5 motorway and has eased congestion along King Georges Road.
The M4-M5 Link is the final and most critical component of WestConnex, featuring twin mainline tunnels between the New M4 at Haberfield and the New M5 at St Peters. Each tunnel will be approximately 7.5 kilometres long and able to accommodate up to four lanes of traffic in each direction. The M4-M5 Link mainline tunnel will be delivered as a stand-alone project.The M4-M5 Link will provide an additional 2.5 hectares of green space in St Peters.
The Rozelle Interchange and Iron Cove Link is the most complex stage of the M4-M5 Link connecting to the surrounding road network and future Western Harbour Tunnel via underground tunnels.
